Walking in NYC – The Highline

Summer in New York City is an amazing time. The sun is out, the weather is beautiful, and you can walk to so many great places. I live in New Jersey, and take the train into Penn Station. From there, one of my favorite places to go is the Highline. They recently converted the old elevated train tracks on 10th ave (from about 30th street to about 10th street) to a walking park.

This park has patches of grass, flowers growing on the side, and historical monuments to the structure that it previously was. There are still exposed tracks, giving the highline an amazing vintage feel. Also, walking north to south, you get an unprecedented view across the Island of Manhattan at each avenue, and most of the time walking north there is a great view of the Empire State Building.

To get out of the heat, another one of my favorite places to go in the Summer is Chelsea Market. This is actually at the southern end of the Highline, at about 14th and 10th. It’s a really neat marketplace, with a bunch of little eateries and shops. I usually get the crepes, they are a really good deal in the city, and they use all fresh produce and craft cheeses, which I think is a perfect summer meal. Of course, since it’s inside, it’s air conditioned, and on some of those really hot summer days, it’s nice to be able to walk around while still inside.

I usually make a day out of those two places. It’s so easy to take the train in, walk to the Highline, enjoy the park and the flowers and the grass, then cool off and eat lunch in Chelsea Marketplace. I love it, my girlfriend does, and I’m sure you will!
