Waiting at Penn Station

When I was a junior in college, I decided to visit a friend of mine in New York City.  I was from the west coast, and I had never been there before, so naturally I was somewhat wary of going.  I decided to take the bus up from Washington DC to New York.  I figured I would be spending a ton of money in the city anyway, so I might as well just find a cheap way of getting there. Well, my bus left Washington DC around 3PM and was going to get into New York around 10 PM.  My friend was going to be going to a Met’s game right before picking me up, but he said the game should end in time for him to come pick me up.

Well, as it happened, the game went into extra innings, and he was not at the bus station (Penn Station) when I got there.  I called his phone, and he did not pick up.  He s a joker, so I figured he was trying to freak me out so that I would be a curled up in a fetal position crying when he got there.  I think that was the first time I had an out of body experience, waiting for him at Penn Station.  I felt myself looking at everybody else from the top of the postal building.  It’s amazing how small you can feel in a brand new city all by yourself with nowhere to go.

Luckily, about an hour later, he showed up, and my first visit to New York was great!
