Free Concerts in the Park

There are a number of free concerts offered in the parks during the summer in New York City. My favorite is probably the New York Philharmonic concert in Central Park. Concerts by the Philharmonic are also offered in each of the 5 boroughs but the largest audience is in Central Park. It is a very festive atmosphere. People usually picnic before and during the concert. And, some picnics are very elaborate, complete with silverware, glass stemmed wine glasses, and candles. Everyone eats such a wide variety of food, everything from gourmet to Chinese takeout and pizza. True New Yorkers provide a feast to share with friends and get to the park no later than 6:00 p.m. in order to get a good spot to listen to the concert. Some people camp out all day to get the best spots. If you get there when the concerts starts at 8:00 p.m.,  well, you are surely out of luck. At best you’ll be sitting in the back of the expansive field without a view of the orchestra. Also, the whole family can share in the experience, including children and well-behaved pets. Usually there are fireworks at the end of the concert…and they are always a treat for both the young and old. It’s a classy evening filled with good music, nice company, and fine music!

Come to think of it, I’ll know my answer next time anybody asks me, “Where can I take a date in New York City?”
