It was the spring of 1996 and my choir was accepted into nationals, which were held in New York City. We all loaded the bus and headed out from Elkins, WV. I was excited about my first trip to New York City. Being able to share this experience with my peers made it even better. There were so many things I heard about it—Broadway, street performers, NY pizza, and so much more!
We arrived in New York later that night and got to our hotel rooms to settle down for the night. The next day we all went to explore New York. My friend and I, being the goofs that we were, decided that we would stand on the street corner downtown, him holding a hat and myself dancing. We both began dancing and singing “New York, New York,” holding the hat out for change. To our surprise, people were tipping us…and well at that!
We continued on our New York adventure towards Broadway to see ‘Les Miserables’. I was dressed up for the show, in heals and dress, and we were running late. I started running down the street to try and make the show in time when suddenly the heal broke on my shoe and I began tumbling right towards the door of this store as this lady was opening the door. Of course I ended up rolling all the way into the store. It was a little embarrassing, but obviously quite hilarious! We laughed about it for the rest of the trip.
All in all, it was an extremely memorable trip to NYC, tumble and all!
