A Mariners/Yankees Playoff Memory

One of my strongest baseball playoff memories involves the New York Yankees and my hometown Seattle Mariners. It was October 1995, and it was game 5 of the ALDS. It was an exciting game! The Yankees and Mariners went into extra innings with a score of 4-4.

The Yankees scored one run in the top of the 11th. In the bottom of the 11th, the Mariners put two runners on base. Up to the plate stepped Edgar Martinez, one of the best double hitters around. Jack McDowell was on the mound, and pitches a few to Edgar. Suddenly…WHAM! Edgar smacks a double. Little Joey Cora scored, and the third base coach frantically waved Ken Griffey, Jr. around third plate towards home. The ball was thrown to home, the Mariners teammates signaled for Griffey to get down and slide. SAFE!!! Mariners win!!

This was a bit of a shock because the Yankees were very hard to pull off a win against, especially a playoff win!
