Why the Yanks Deserve Your Respect

It’s that time of the year once again. The autumn breeze sends a slight chill up your arm, the trees with their colorful leaves line streets across the country, and the New York Yankees are in the playoffs. AGAIN.

I grew up and still am a diehard Chicago White Sox fan, and throughout many roller coaster years with my ballclub, there has been one constant: the Yankees making the postseason. Whether you love the Bronx Bombers or despise everything they stand for, you must respect them. The Yankees are a class above every other major league team, with a storied history that no other professional sports team can rival. A trophy case full of World Series titles, Hall of Fame players and the aura of playing in New York City make the Yankees truly America’s team.

You can say that you hate them, but any real baseball fan respects them. Even Boston Red Sox fans, whose team is the Yankees ultimate archenemy, will say that deep down they have a sort of admiration for their loathed rivals. In a way, the Yankees stand for everything America stands for. An example of capitalism at its finest, the Yanks do (and spend) whatever it takes to succeed year in and year out. They are a here-and-now team, forever living in the present and never worrying about the future. Who needs prospects when you can pay perennial All-Stars nine-figure contracts every offseason? They are a world-recognized brand, and they run their organization like a corporation first and a ballclub second.

So while you sit on your couch this postseason and watch as the Yankees roll through another playoff series, take a second to appreciate that the Yankees are truly America’s team, no matter who you root for.
